Lyrics ~

I was relieved and encouraged when I learned about the long and honorable tradition among blues artists to rewrite lyrics because I very seldom sing someone else's song without changing it, sometimes quite a bit.   These are lyrics I've written or changed.   I compose melodies for my own songs.   Russ and Mike made the music and magic for them until 2015.   In 2016 a new set of players is developing a whole new sound ~~ a sound I call "sugar blues".

Burnt Sugar Blues

melody and lyrics by Christy Ann Welty
            (c)  2011

I'm so sweet your teeth ache to see me
Yeah I'm a sucker when it comes to love
I'm so sweet your teeth ache to see me
So you see just a lollipop to lust for
See I'm singing   //   A song about us beginning . . . y'know if it's
Lust and not love it's bringing   //   The Burnt Sugar Blues

Better than a brownie at bedtime
Is sugar in the evening with you
And chocolate in my coffee for breakfast
Don't beat sugar in the morning for two
So now I'm singing   //   A song about us flinging
Y'know lust not love'll be bringing   //   The Burnt Sugar Blues

I like to lick honey from your fingers
I like to taste your honey on my tongue
I like to eat your honey when I'm hungry
And drink up all your honey when you come (to visit)
I'm singing   //   A song about us m-m-m But if this is
Lust and not love it's bringing   //   The Burnt Sugar Blues

Well, I was sweet and your teeth ached for sugar
Yes, I was such a sucker in love
I was sweet and your teeth ached for sugar
So you saw just a lollipop to lust for
So I'm singing   //   A song about us - I'm singing
It was lust it wasn't love and that's the meaning of The Burnt * * Sugar * * Blues

Coconut Oil

melody and lyrics by Christy Ann Welty
            (c)  2010, 2013

When coconut oil runs thin and clear, the day is hot and summer's here
Pour oil of coconut from the jar, then slip and slide like a steel guitar
Yes, sli-i-i-ide

When bar of chocolate gonna be goo, the day be hot and so be you
Glide your finger through chocolate bar, then lick and glide like a steel guitar
Yes, gli-i-i-ide

When sweat oo-ooze and soak you wet, the day get hot and gettin' hotter yet
Go soak a hose, make a muddy backyard, then slip and slide like a steel guitar
Yes, sli-i-i-ide

When coconut oil runs thin and clear, the day is hot and summer's here
Pour oil of coconut from the jar, then slip and slide like a steel guitar
Yes, sli-i-i-ide . . . .  Yes, sli-i-i-ide . . . .  Yes, sli-i-i-ide

Would You Catch Me

melody and lyrics by Christy Ann Welty
            (c)  2012

Would you catch me if I fall, would you hear me if I call
Would you hold me if I crawl to you . . .
When I can't get up and my back's against the wall

'Cause I'd rustle up some courage, I'd take a risk, I'd risk a fall
If I knew you'd hear me when I call . . .
And you'd be there when my back's against the wall

You say you're no one's hero, do no damsel a deed
No knight in shining armor, no prince on charging steed
You say you're no one's hero, but you might be all I need
If you catch me, hear me, hold me, when I fall, when I bleed
* * * * *
If I fought the fight for what's good and right, had nothing left, if I spent it all
I'd never feel too proud to crawl . . .
If you were there to hold me, after all

If I fought the fight for what's good and right, had nothing left, if I spent it all
I'd never feel too proud to crawl . . .
If you were there to hold me, after all

You say you're no one's hero, you say that's not your style
No knight in shining armor, no rescue worth your while
but maybe it's not rescue I need, maybe just your time
to catch me, hear me, hold me if I fall before I cross the finish line
* * * * *
Would you catch me if I fall, would you hear me if I call
Would you hold me if I crawl to you . . .
When I can't get up and my back's against the wall

'Cause I'd never feel too proud to crawl . . .
If you were there to hold me, after all
No, I'd never feel too proud to crawl . . .
If you were there to hold me . . . . . . .

Things We Said Today (short)

lyrics by Paul McCartney & Christy Ann Welty

You say you will love me / if I have to go
You'll be thinking of me / somehow I will know
Someday when I'm lonely, wishing you weren't so far away
Then I will remember / things we said today

You say you'll be mine, love, 'til the end of time
These days such a kind / seems so hard to find
Someday when we're dreaming, deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember / things we said today

Me I'm just the lucky kind, love to hear you say that love's enough
And tho it may be blind, love is here to stay and that's e---

-nough to make you mine, love, even when I'm gone
Love me all of the time / we'll go on and on
Someday when we're dreaming, deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember / things we said today

Things we said today, yes, things we said today
